Preserving India’s Artisanal Heritage: Celebrating Craft, Culture and Vision (Mumbai, India)
New Acropolis hosted a special event at The Chanakya School of Craft, centred on “Preserving India’s Artisanal Heritage”. Karishma Swali, the creative director, shared her passion for safeguarding this heritage by collaborating with master-artisans and making their creations accessible globally. Craft was underscored as a vessel of culture that fosters community harmony. This event rekindled an appreciation for ancestral heritage, emphasised craft’s integration into daily life, and demonstrated the transformative power of visionary action.
Founded in 2016, the Chanakya School of Craft, inspired by Tagore and Shantivan, has educated over 1000 women in crafts traditionally limited to men, intertwining values from inspirational women with 300 crafting techniques. The event showcased couture archives, highlighting skilled artisans’ use of ancient techniques, and offered a Living Museum featuring 13th generation master-artisans practicing various crafts.
