On the 500th anniversary of the publication of Thomas More’s book Utopia, the Director of New Acropolis UK, Sabine Leitner, presented an evening inspired by the imaginary island that the author used as a representation of the perfect society. The talk offered an exploration of what utopias are and suggested that they can be seen as necessary drivers of change.

An evening that included a theoretical presentation about Indian Sacred Dance and a beautiful performance was given by our guest speaker Miti Desai. She is the founder of a cultural collective dedicated to the study and practice of sacred arts and holistic sciences with a spiritual vision and lifestyle. Through her presentation, the audience was transported into a different understanding of dance, which is focused on the experience of the formless through the form. Her ideas were harmoniously complemented by her live performance, including poetry, music and movement. The evening was well attended and participants were able to witness an expression of what sacred dance is. The speaker was able to enchant the audience with some mythological descriptions and afterwards the same ideas were transmitted through movement.

A Wheel of Virtues and a group of dressed up philosophers went to Broadway Market in London on a busy Saturday. People were encouraged to have a go at spinning the ‘wheel’, getting a virtue and receiving an inspiring quote. More than a hundred pedestrians were attracted by seeing ‘ancient philosophers’ approaching them with information about this international celebration. It was a very successful activity and a great way of spreading philosophy in our society.

bodyworkshop-1
The workshop was given by our guest speaker Sebastian Perez, a guitarist and music teacher from Spain, who encouraged us to explore the world of rhythm and the use of the body to express it. We started by feeling our heartbeat and our breathing, and gradually we created an orchestra in which our bodies were the only instruments. People enjoyed creating sequences of movement of increasing complexity and the quality of playfulness this entailed. The comments of the participants focused on the importance of coordination, listening to others and allowing the body to flow rather than thinking too much. It was clearly an active evening with practical exercises and great fun.

Official Opening of Community Playground

New Acropolis volunteers and friends from the community joined in the opening of a children’s woodland playground in the public gardens in front of the New Acropolis Center. As New Acropolis volunteers have been volunteering regularly, we helped to organize an afternoon with plenty of children and families exploring nature and interacting with it in different ways.

Children got involved in building fairy houses, watering plants, planting, running around and listening to some stories. Cakes and drinks were provided and a lovely accordionist added a special atmosphere. People gave a very positive feedback about the event and the neighbourhood celebrated this achievement.

Parallel to this we had launched a story competition months before inspired by the ‘Spirit of the Place’ and booklets were sold on the day, promoting some creative writing amongst our volunteers.
