Ecological action at Fruška Gora (Novi Sad, Serbia)

Ecological Volunteering

Volunteers from New Acropolis Serbia carried out an eco-action in Fruška Gora National Park, filling ten sacks with garbage found in the forest. Following the cleaning, the volunteers gave a lecture titled “The Hidden World of the Mineral Kingdom” on the plateau behind the Park’s visitor center. The lecture focused on geological processes, with special attention to the formation of Fruška Gora, the Pannonian Basin, and the Pannonian Sea.

According to Marko Čumić, the instructor at New Acropolis Novi Sad, the lecture aimed to present the classical concept of Gaia—Planet Earth as the mother of various life forms—through a scientific lens.

“It is necessary to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of ecological problems. The philosophical approach is to remove the causes, and among the main ones is the wrong understanding that man is the ruler of nature. Such thinking has led to an anthropocentric view of the problem which suggests that the planet must be clean for us humans to breathe cleaner air, eat healthier food, and drink cleaner water. A deeper, philosophical approach to humans’ place in nature is that we are part of one great Life. Such an attitude would give us a better approach not only in the field of ecological problems but also in interpersonal relationships, and ultimately, our relationship with ourselves.”
