Painting walls in a group home for people with disabilities (Russia-North)

Social Volunteering

Volunteers from New Acropolis from Saint Petersburg, Petrozavodsk and Veliky Novgorod (Russia-North) held a series of events at the home where disabled women with special physical and mental development needs live.

The main activity was painting murals on a 1.3 by 3 meter staircase, and on a 4 by 3 meter wall in the room where they dine and live together, as well as where they have all kinds of meetings.
This was preceded by almost a year of preparation, during which members of the South Section of St. Petersburg’s New Acropolis figured out how to create something with an immersive effect. They drew sketches, made templates and developed technology so that 15 volunteers could achieve what they had imagined in 4 days.

We are inspired by the motto “From diversity to unity”. Each volunteer found his own role in the common work: some worked with the background, others applied paints with stencils, others painted details to give life to the painting and others washed brushes and cleaned. The women residents of the collective house also actively participated in all stages of the painting. The result of our teamwork was a harmonious and inspiring landscape.

In addition, during these 4 days the “Song Gathers Friends” concert was offered; Russian folk games were held indoors and outdoors; The sports field on the grounds of the group house was cleaned up for sports competitions and training; and we enjoyed fun circle dances from different cultures.
