Sharing Warmth – Volunteering for the Unhoused (Chicago, USA)
On a cold December day volunteers from the New Acropolis school in Chicago met at their school to prepare home-cooked soup and sandwiches for unhoused people in the city. In the previous weeks members of school collected and donated multiple bags of winter coats, sweaters, pants, scarves and hats and prepared them for distribution.
After cooking and organizing the donations the volunteers headed out to deliver them to members of the community who needed them for the cold and snowy winter.
While giving out the food and clothes, we shared moments of warmth with our neighbors, and as we were engaging in conversations we realized that at the end of the day, beyond external differences and circumstances, all people just want to have a warm human contact, without judgment, with kindness and with dignity.
This humbling and humane experience left a warm feeling in both the volunteers and the recipients’ hearts.
