Visit to the Cacao Trail (San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic)
Volunteers, friends and members of New Acropolis, participated in a recreational and cultural trip to the Cocoa Trail, where they enjoyed and experienced the art of Dominican cocoa and chocolate making at Hacienda La Esmeralda, located in San Francisco de Macoris.
There they learned about the processes for harvesting high quality cocoa: planting, harvesting, splitting the cob and extracting the beans. Then the post-harvest process: fermentation and drying, which are determining factors in the quality of the chocolate. They also learned about the ecosystem of the Dominican Republic and why it offers the perfect conditions for growing fine cocoa that is transformed into chocolate of the highest quality.
The trip continued in the province of Hermanas Mirabal, where they were able to visit the beautiful murals of local and foreign artists that decorate the streets. The tour ended at the Museum of the Mirabal Sisters, important national heroines.
