Discovering Belém: Cultural tour of the COP30 headquarters (Brazil)

Cultural Volunteering
New Acropolis hosted the traditional “Discovering Belém”: a cultural tour of the COP30 headquarters (Brazil), in celebration of the city’s 409th anniversary. Held for over two decades, the event offers a unique opportunity to explore the stories, symbols and traditions that make the city a special place.
The meeting point was the Santo Alexandre Church, which also houses the Museum of Sacred Art, located in Dom Caetano Brandão Square. This time, the tour included seven emblematic sites of Belém’s architectural history. The Forte do Castelo, the Casa das Onze Janelas, the Sé Cathedral, the Church of São João, Felipe Patroni Square and the Belém Art Museum (MABE) completed the itinerary, which was a dive into the city’s history and culture.
The Discovering Belém project aims to rescue the memory, not only of heritage, but also of timeless values that are present in local history. Visinting the symbols allows us to recognize the archetypes that inspired certain buildings or moments in the capital of Pará.
Culture, like philosophy, inspires us to seek knowledge, beauty and universal values. On every corner of the historic center, we find lessons in courage, overcoming and creativity. The volunteers and students of New Acropolis, together with the public who participated in the visit, were able to reflect on the richness of their cultural heritage. In addition, it was highlighted how philosophy helps us see beyond what the eyes can see, connecting the past to the present with wisdom. Thus, the visit is an invitation to contemplation, learning and building a deeper perspective on the world around us.
New Acropolis has been offering the tour for over 20 years. It is free of charge and on a voluntary basis, to raise awareness about the city’s history. “Philosophy teaches us that our own history holds part of the answer. So, at New Acropolis, the search for the recovery of local identity by recovering the memory of its people is the way we do this. Strolling through the historic center, contemplating the beauty of our historical heritage and seeking to extract from them the timeless values that inspired them or inspired an era,” explains Edmilton Furtado, a volunteer at New Acropolis Belém.
