The fire of San Juan illuminated El Cabo with magic, symbols and renewal (Alicante, Spain)
With the arrival of the summer solstice, we celebrated our usual emotional beach party, where we remembered ancestral rituals and hoped for a new cycle.
El Cabo experienced a magical night with the celebration of the Festival of San Juan, where we gathered by the sea to pay tribute to the summer solstice, one of the most symbolic nights of the year, where, amid flames, music and tradition, the spirit of renewal was present.
The evening began with a few words about the profound meaning of this date, which since ancient times has represented the peak of the solar cycle and the moment of maximum vital energy. It is also a propitious night to let go of burdens, reaffirm resolutions and celebrate life.
An outdoor dinner was served, with the traditional coca de tonyina as the main course, accompanied by sangria and figs, typical of this time of year. While enjoying the food, each of the attendees dressed the wooden doll with old clothes, which was later burned, thus imbuing it with personal meaning.
One of the most special rituals came when each person wrote down on a piece of paper a virtue they wish to cultivate during the coming year. These pieces of paper were carefully placed in a floral arrangement made that same afternoon by all the ladies in attendance. In a gesture full of delicacy and beauty, one of the women in the group handed the offering to another member of the group, who immersed it in the sea to deposit it as a symbol of dedication, continuity, and commitment.
At the same time, each person also wrote on a second piece of paper three negative aspects of themselves that they wish to transform or leave behind. These pieces of paper were placed on the doll, which was set alight after the offering to the sea. The purifying, dancing flames consumed the old to make way for the new.
When the fire began to die down, it was time to jump over it. One by one, in pairs or in threes, the attendees jumped over the flames, thus joyfully sealing their intentions for the new cycle. The night ended with dancing around the fire, hugs and the certainty of having shared something special.
It was, without a doubt, a night to remember: simple and profound, joyful and symbolic. A celebration that united tradition, nature and soul.
