Cutting the “Vasilopita”, new year’s cake (Nicosia, Cyprus)
As is customary in January, we cut our traditional “Vasilopita”, the new year’s cake, continuing a tradition passed down for generation to generation – another bridge between yesterday and today.
In Ortodox cultures, this moment brings together families, friends and loved ones around the Vasilopita, a cake hiding a small “lucky coin” inside. This coin may be just one, but it becomes a spart for smiles, wishes and joy – the essential ingredients for a moment of genuine connection with the community that surrounds us.
