Book club Sophia: Madam Curie – First Lady of Science (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Cultural Activities

The last meeting of the Sophia Reading Club was dedicated to the great scientist Marie Curie. The book discussed, “Madame Curie – A Biography”, was written by her daughter, Eva Curie.

The participants got to know more about the life and work of Marie Curie (1867-1934), the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, but also the first person to win the prize twice, for Physics and Chemistry. Most of all, it is fascinating that despite all the achievements and accolades, she remained diligent, dignified and modest.

Fragments from the book were read at the event. Then it was discussed how much this outstanding scientist gifted humanity with her inventions, and how her selflessness and dedication to work can be an inspiration to us today.

As Maria Curie said: “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.”
