Sharing Warmth with the Homeless Community (Chicago, USA)

Social Volunteering

The winters in Chicago are very cold and harsh. In December, a group of 20 volunteers from the New Acropolis school in Chicago met and prepared hot soup, healthy sandwiches and coffee and tea and brought it to the community of unhoused people in the neighborhood.

The volunteers shared the food they prepared but most importantly shared human warmth, kindness and care.

The volunteers recognized that besides the basic human needs such as shelter, safety, nourishment and heat, what the homeless community needed most is the human connection, the non-judgemental, open communication, the warm and kind hands and hearts. They needed to be seen and treated as human beings, and not ignored or pitied.

The volunteers were able to help a little but received in return a valuable lesson in compassion, humility, generosity and experienced first-hand the power of community.
