The Meaning of Halloween (Kyoto, Japan)
Even though nowadays Halloween might be only seen as a fun costume day an opportunity for trick or treating, as philosophers, we always try to go back to the origins of traditions to understand where they come from, and to what purpose they serve. As we found out “All Hallows’ Eve” was always celebrated at the midpoint between the fall equinox, and the winter solstice, to welcome in the harvest, and usher in “the dark half of the year”, students of New Acropolis also used this opportunity to think of our bright days of summer before us, and the dark days that would come ahead. We decided to bring with us all the light that we shared under the sun into the cold winter, to keep us warm inside.
While we enjoyed conversation, we decorated our school in a witchy way and had delicious scary treats that we prepared ourselves. This was a real fun and interesting day!
