Renowned sitarist Asad Gulrez Khan and his disciples of the ‘Mewati Gharana’ performed unplugged at the New Acropolis center in Mumbai. It was a spirited performance which lasted over 2 hours!
The first part of the evening consisted of a solo musical performance by one of the disciples – Mandar Namjoshi, for about an hour. Asad ji spoke of some tenets of the master – disciple tradition in the Indian musical “gharanas” and he touched upon elements of respect for the audience, their fellow performers and even to their instrument. With a concise explanation of some basics of music composition, the floor was left open for questions. Asad ji answered questions on a variety of topics related to music, philosophy and how the two are closely related.
