Education for Transformation with Prof T.S. Powdyel, former Education Minister of Bhutan (Mumbai, India)
New Acropolis’ Culture Circle in Mumbai hosted an event with Prof. Thakur S. Powdyel, the former Education Minister of Bhutan, who spoke on Education, The Noble Sector. Through the talk he shared the importance of being born as human beings with unique gifts such as a great capacity for imagination and the capacity to create.
Prof. Powdyel explained, how Bhutan as a country recognised the importance of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as opposed to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GNH focuses on the multi-dimensional aspects of life and believes that the most profound yearning of the human being is the achievement of happiness. This idea forms a guiding principle that leads all aspects of life in Bhutan including education.
Sharing that education is a means to enhance the nobility of the human being, he proposed that the purpose of education should be transformation rather than passing information.
Prof.Powdyel is an educator by choice and is an International Gusi Peace Laureate, his concepts are expounded in his book “My Green School”.
