Gellért Hill cleaning action on Earth Day (Budapest, Hungary)
“Who says you can’t change the world?” This is the motto of the Earth Day movement, which is 55 years old this year, and which more than sixty volunteers felt was their own during the joint Earth Day cleaning action on Gellért Hill organized by New Acropolis Hungary and Főkert Ltd (responsible for the environmental services in Budapest).
The participants collected rubbish, cleared 85 metres of ditches of accumulated leaf litter and thinned out invasive horseweed in the designated area. During the lunch break, those interested had the chance to test their nature conservation skills with a green quiz, courtesy of Főkert. The children were brought closer to nature with a fairy tale and a forest walk. By the end of the day, it was not only the hill that became cleaner, but also people’s awareness that if they join forces, they can truly change the world.
In the cleaning action took part the students and teachers of Kaffka Margit Primary School, Petőfi Sándor Secondary School of District I, and BMSZC Pataky István Vocational School of Telecommunications and Information Technology, and also the volunteers of Street Medic with their first aid patrol service.
