Social Volunteering

In Barcelona, the reality of homelessness continues to be alarming. According to the latest data from the Arrels Foundation, 4,504 people are homeless in the city and 1,384 of them spend the night on the streets. A figure that not only represents a social challenge, but also a call for empathy and action.

Last Epiphany, a group of 54 volunteers from New Acropolis Barcelona responded to this call. Thanks to their joint effort, they managed to prepare 100 bags of food that included two sandwiches of fresh bread, canned goods, a juice, a smoothie, fruit, a yoghurt and some sweets. In addition, to combat the cold, they added a warm vegetable cream, a handmade postcard with messages of hope and an information sheet about the social resources available in Barcelona.

The team of volunteers covered 16 areas of the city, focusing on districts such as Ciutat Vella, Sants-Montjuïc and Eixample, where there are more people in this situation of vulnerability. During the day, they not only distributed food, but also something even more valuable: time, attention and company.

This solidarity event was also an opportunity to reflect on homelessness, a complex phenomenon that combines structural, institutional and personal causes. The importance of not blaming those who suffer from it, of focusing on capabilities and the need to combat prejudices and false myths associated with this reality was highlighted.

According to a survey conducted by the Arrels Foundation in June 2023, four out of ten people living on the street have no one to confide in. This extreme loneliness reinforces the importance of everyday gestures such as greeting them, asking them how they are, if they need anything… generosity is not always about money, but about a moment of company, making a phone call, a blanket, or helping them with something.

The day culminated with the reading of a poem by Khalil Gibran, who reminded all present that ‘there are those who give with joy and that joy is their reward’. A phrase that resonated with the volunteers after an afternoon of generosity, joy and social commitment.

Actions like this remind us that solidarity can transform not only the lives of people in vulnerable situations, but also those who choose to dedicate their time and energy to help. Every small action can make a difference.
