“Through Diversity to Unity” – the Night of Philosophy (Ekaterinburg, Russia)

World Philosophy Day

It all started with living Plato’s myth of the cave. Together we reflected on what “shadows” are, why it is difficult for us to allow a different point of view, what “fetters” hinder, and what helps unity. To test the theory with practice, the participants went through tasks on cohesion. The experience showed that even if we know the right answer, it is not so easy to realize unity in practice.

And then practical philosophy comes to the rescue. At the next stage – “Wheel of Practices” – each participant could master 4 philosophical keys that help harmonious interaction with others:
1) the key of “gratitude” from the Stoics,
2) the key of “ability to see the best” from the Neoplatonists,
3) the key of “interconnectedness and compassion” from Buddhism,
4) the key of “being happy by cultivating your virtues” from Aristotle.

In the short dialogues phase, “Shall we talk?” discussed how to apply these keys in life, the Philosophy students shared their experiences, and everyone got to know each other better together.

At the traditional Philosophical Couch they answered exciting questions about purpose, responsibility, forgiveness…

And at the end, already deep in the night, the participants realized that they themselves had gone from diversity to unity, from complete ignorance of each other to understanding what unites us despite our differences.
