Socrates evening (Bordeaux, France)

Cultural Activities

In Bordeaux, a group of enthusiasts gathered to immerse themselves in the world of Socrates, guided by two passionate and courageous speakers. A symbol of inner strength, the Greek philosopher always knew how to press on in the face of crisis and remain true to his ideas, right up until his death.

The programme for the Socrates evening

• Live scenes performed by members of the school, centred on Socrates’ ‘three sieves’.

• A poetic recitation of his final speech before his death.

• A moving and interactive debate, which introduced participants to the art of argumentation in a spirit of goodwill.

The evening was further enriched by a theoretical presentation on his life and his key teachings.

The great crises that shaped Socrates

Three decisive moments marked the philosopher’s life and shaped his legacy:

1. The betrayal by his first disciple.

2. The revelation from the Oracle of Delphi, which proclaimed him ‘the wisest’.

3. His trial and death sentence.

At every stage, Socrates chose the path of justice, teaching, connection and fidelity to his ideas, even going so far as to sacrifice his life for them.

Socrates’ method: maieutics

His philosophical approach, known as maieutics, consisted of ‘bringing souls to light’ through dialogue. A timeless method that invites everyone to reflect for themselves.

Socrates: as relevant as ever

This philosophical evening was lively, interactive and, above all, inspiring. Socrates is not merely a figure from the past: he remains a timeless model of inner strength and wisdom in action.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this wonderful start to the academic year at the New Acropolis Bordeaux School of Philosophy!
