Official Opening of Community Playground

New Acropolis volunteers and friends from the community joined in the opening of a children’s woodland playground in the public gardens in front of the New Acropolis Center. As New Acropolis volunteers have been volunteering regularly, we helped to organize an afternoon with plenty of children and families exploring nature and interacting with it in different ways.

Children got involved in building fairy houses, watering plants, planting, running around and listening to some stories. Cakes and drinks were provided and a lovely accordionist added a special atmosphere. People gave a very positive feedback about the event and the neighbourhood celebrated this achievement.

Parallel to this we had launched a story competition months before inspired by the ‘Spirit of the Place’ and booklets were sold on the day, promoting some creative writing amongst our volunteers.

myth-of-caveNew Acropolis presented at the Orion cultural center of Warsaw a staging of Plato’s myth of the cave, an adaptation of the popular Platonic dialogue from the Republic.

The theatrical performance gave way to an open discussion on this myth and the usefulness of philosophy in today’s world.

La lumière de la caverne - Journée mondiale de la philosophie à Montréal

For a tenth consecutive year, New Acropolis Montreal celebrated World Philosophy Day. The topic for this year was about the famous allegory of the cave from Plato, written over 2400 years ago.

In the first part, a short theatrical play about the allegory was presented to the public. It was an adaptation for our time. It staged a dialogue between a young man, who questioned himself about the meaning of life, and his father, for whom most important values were work, career, stability, etc. Then, this same youth met two other people with whom he could talk about his ideals and what is in his heart. For these people, it was important to have a job and studies, etc. but also important to seek a higher meaning to existence.

After the presentation, participants were invited to discuss with the speaker about the meaning of the allegory and its importance.
