In the framework of the commemoration of Youth Day, “Darte-Arte” brought together several institutions, including New Acropolis, to celebrate a day of laughter, color and games in the park of the ruins in Carthage.

New Acropolis volunteers organized a workshop of mandalas which attracted the interest and participation of people of all ages who dedicated themselves to painting them. These creations were exposed in the outdoor Gallery.

New Acropolis South Africa organized a volunteer event aimed at restoring a touch of dignity to the lives of the homeless individuals living in the Johannesburg CBD.

A ‘pop-up’ restaurant was set up in the Maboneng district, and appeals went out to the community for donations of food, sanitary pads, and volunteers to staff the restaurant on this day.

The response of the community was overwhelming. The City of Johannesburg Social Development Department supported the initiative by capturing statistics, as there are an estimated 10 000 homeless people moving through Johannesburg monthly. The Department of Health set up a mobile clinic and distributed sanitary pads, provided basic health care services, and conducted HIV and TB screenings.

Many people collaborated on this event, with local performing artists providing live entertainment, and a local radio station broadcasted from the event. Tshwane Security Services generously provided security guards for the day – to make sure everyone was safe.

Achievements of the day included:

  • Donations of food from local businesses and private individuals in the area to feed more than 200 homeless people on this day.
  • Approximately 70 volunteers from within New Acropolis and the community stepped up to staff the restaurant, cook, and provide care for the homeless.
  • Sorbet-Man provided haircuts & shaves for 120 homeless people.
  • Approximately 160 homeless people received basic health care, screening and psycho-education for HIV and tuberculosis.
  • Over 2000 sanitary pads were distributed to homeless ladies attending the event – this was a key win, as the cost of one pack of sanitary pads in Johannesburg is approximately equivalent to 4 nights accommodation in a homeless shelter.

New Acropolis Timisoara volunteers visited the teenagers from Saint Nicholas Center, a partnership that began two years ago.   The activity took place during “The Week of Volunteering” event, organized by Pro Vobis.

On this occasion volunteers prepared a play adaptation of The Little Prince story, aiming to foster the youths’ sensitivity towards theater and art, but also bring them closer to valuable life lessons contained in the short but timeless work by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

The Dental Day was made possible by the efforts  of the organizations of missionary dentists of Puerto Rico, the Church of God of Planes de la Laguna and New Acropolis El Salvador. During three days, more than 200 low-income people received dental care, from the Planes de la Laguna canton, municipality of Santa Ana (in the basin of Lake Coatepeque).

The care provided by the 17 Puerto Rico volunteers – 8 of whom were dentists and 2 dental assistants – was in the form of talks on oral health, fillings in cases of tooth decay, dental extractions, dental cleanings and preventive oral cancer check-ups.

Also, toothbrushes and toothpaste, clothing and toys were donated to the children served. The Care Center operated in the facilities of the Church of God Planes de la Laguna and received the support of the Pastor and parishioners of the Church. New Acropolis helped with all the logistics, legal procedures and permits, lodging, and operational coordination of the event.

2016 Curitiba Brasil-S exposicion02
New Acropolis Curitiba (PR-Brazil) with the support of the Brazilian company of airport infrastructure (Infraero) and building systems (Globalplac), inaugurated the exhibition on “Native Trees” in the departure lounge of the Afonso Pena airport, located in the municipality of São José dos Pinhais in the Afonso Pena airport.

Apart from highlighting the very important role of trees, the exhibition promotes philosophical reflection by means of the direct question: what is my role in the world?

For Antonio Pallu, Superintendent of Infraero, the exhibition highlights the importance of environmental awareness for society. “The airport not is only a place of arrivals and departures. It is a place where we can give a positive message to the public, and care for the environment has been an on-going theme in several areas of the Afonso Pena airport,” he said.

VolunteeringAtConsulateIn the months of January and February of 2001, El Salvador was struck by two high-magnitude earthquakes. In the context of this natural catastrophe, the Federal Government  of the United States granted to the Salvadoran community residing in the United States a means for its members to regularize their immigration status (TPS). Starting from that date, in the region of New England, more than five thousand Salvadorans have been re-inscribed annually in this program.

This year, New Acropolis Boston is collaborating with the Consulate General of El Salvador in Boston in the process of registration, and more than 3500 people are expected to register, representing a saving of thousands of dollars in legal costs to the Salvadoran community.
